About JOT
The Journal of Object Technology (JOT) is a peer-reviewed, free and open-access journal dedicated to the timely publication of previously unpublished research articles, surveys, tutorials, and technical notes on all aspects of object technology. There is no publication fee required. JOT published accepted papers as soon as possible in the next regularly scheduled issue, after receipt of the final copy.
Indexing
JOT is currently listed/indexed by DBLP, Google Scholar, Microsoft Academic Search, SCIRUS, Scientific Commons, DOAJ, Index of IS Journals, and SCOPUS. JOT is registered under ISSN 1660-1769.
Refereed Articles
Submissions are welcome in all areas of Object Technology. JOT welcomes original research contributions, empirical studies, mature best practice reports and state-of-the-art surveys.
Submissions must not have been previously published or submitted for publication in another venue. Research submissions that extend a previously published conference or or workshop paper must contain at least 30% new material to be considered original. The cover letter to the submission must list all related previous publications and detail the differences to the submitted paper. Manuscripts should be concise and complete, and should be carefully proofread. Submissions that do not meet these standards may be returned without review.
Submissions should include a title, list of authors and affiliations, an abstract, a list of keywords and a PDF of the draft for review. Manuscripts should be formatted as 10 point, single column, single-spaced text. JOT does not have fixed page limits, but submissions should typically not exceed 25 pages. Lengthier submissions may be considered if justified. (Supporting material, such as extended code examples or full proofs of theorems may be placed in a separate appendix.) If accepted, the final camera-ready version must be prepared using the provided LaTeX template. (A Word template is provided as an alternative. For best results, you will need to download and install Computer Modern fonts.)
Authors are invited to suggest an Associate Editor of JOT with the appropriate expertise to assess the paper, provided no conflict of interest exists. (An author is considered to have a conflict of interest with an editor or reviewer if they have co-authored papers or have otherwise been in a close professional relationship within the past six years.) An acknowledgement of receipt from the editor should be expected within a few days of submitting a paper.
Members of the Editorial Board are permitted to submit papers to JOT.
Review Process
Submissions will be evaluated on the basis of their relevance, originality, timeliness, significance and presentation.
- Submit your paper as a PDF to editor@jot.fm, following the guidelines listed above.
- Papers that are clearly unacceptable will be returned by the Editor-in-Chief (EiC) without being reviewed.
- Papers for review will be assigned to an Associate Editor (AE). The AE may decide to reject the paper with a short review.
- Otherwise the AE will select three expert reviewers to carry out a detailed assessment.
- The AE will recommend acceptance or rejection of the paper based on the returned reviews and on the AE's own assessment. In rare cases, additional reviews may be solicited.
- A paper may be accepted, rejected, or provisionally accepted pending a major revision. Revised papers may be subject to a full review. The corresponding author should normally receive notification of a decision within three months of submission.
- A revised paper must be accompanied by a cover letter detailing how the revised manuscript addresses the concerns raised by the reviewers.
- Accepted papers will be published without delay upon receipt of the final camera-ready copy. (Planned for 2011.)
- All papers published by JOT will be assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) to guarantee their archival nature. Papers should be cited as specified by JOT, including the DOI, where available.
Copyright
Upon acceptance of your submission, you will be asked to sign a standard copyright transfer form assigning the copyright to JOT.
Blog Entries
JOT also welcomes short articles, technical notes, tutorials, technology updates, book and product reviews, guest editorials, columns, and other timely and newsworthy announcements. Whereas refereed articles should have a strong scientific component, blog postings will be selected for newsworthiness, technical relevance and accuracy. Submissions will be accepted at the editor's discretion, possibly entailing a streamlined review process, and will be published on the JOT Blog as they become available.
Special Sections
A special section of JOT consists of a number of papers on a specialized topic. The papers may be extended versions of “best” papers that have already been presented at a conference, workshop, or another event, or they may be papers submitted to an open call for a special section.
A special section is prepared by one or more guest editors, who should also prepare a guest editorial introducing the special section. One option is to invite a JOT Associated Editor to act as a guest editor.
Extended versions of previously published papers should contain at least “30% new content” over the published version. This may take the form of, say, full proofs of theorems, empirical validation, or new results.
There is no fixed minimum number of papers that are needed to form a special section. There is no fixed page limit for JOT articles, though it is expected that most submissions will not exceed 25 pages with the standard JOT template. If justified, longer submissions can be considered.
All papers in a special section must go through a full review process, as described on the JOT web site. In particular, each paper should undergo at least three peer reviews. Accepted papers should be of “journal quality” — that is, they should describe mature and complete results, rather than work in progress. A standard review form is available.
The guest editors are free to propose the schedule for the special section.
Once the camera-ready copy is received for the special section, papers will be put online as soon as practically possible. (Normally within a few days.)
